Troop 75 ~ APPALACHIAN PACK HIKE

I. CLOTHES

     A. Change of underpants, socks, & T Shirts - 1/DAY (max = 3 + wear 1, can wash)

           ~roll into sets w/rubber bands, & pack into ziploc bags

~note: Synthetic wicking (non-cotton) T-Shirts are best and socks should be multi-component hiking socks or a polypropylene liner sock with outer wool or rag wool hiking sock, do not rely on cotton athletic sock

     B. Hiking pants (not cotton jeans!)and Shorts(1 each unless cargo zip off pants)

C. Hooded Fleece (no cotton!) & Synthetic Long Sleeve T-Shirt and/or sweater or vest (capable of combining to dress in layers under rain jacket!)

     D. Hiking boots ~ w/ light weight flip flops for camp!

     E. Baseball or brimmed hat (Sun Burn!), & sock hat, if Fleece not hooded

     F. Breathable Rain jacket & pack cover (gators & shorts better than rain pants)

 

II. PERSONAL GEAR

     A. Toiletries:   Hand soap - Ivory (cut & put in film can) or Camp Suds ONLY

                       Toothbrush, tooth paste, & floss

                       Plastic Shovel & Toilet paper ~ mostly used roll

                       Face & dish towel ~ to dry self & mess gear

B. First Aid/ Survival Kit ~ pack some essentials in a ziploc bag: Moleskin/Compete Pad, threaded needle in ace bandage, band aides/gauze, water purify pills, matches, fire starter, clothes pins (tinder), 1st aid cream, chap stick, tape, safety pins, bug spray, sun block, whistle & Rx

     C. Handkerchief ~ hunter/farmer type (large paisley type)

     D. Garbage bags & ties:2 kitchen  ~ 1 for boots / 1 for laundry                                   2 leaf ~cover pack at night & carry trash (no tear type)

     E. Lighter & Wood matches(strike anywhere w/striker)~in match or spice container      F. Package of nylon rope & lashing twine, few clothes pins -wood w/ spring

     G. Sleeping bag and closed cell pad & line, strap or bungee to attach

     H. Pocket knife - Swiss army type best

     I. Compass (Silva type) & Map set

     J. Utensils, and cup/plate (16 oz. Sierra cup/bowl) or cup & margarine tub

     K. Flashlight w/ extra batteries & bulb (“AA” penlight) or “AAA” Diode Headlamp

     L. Pad & pencil - important!

     M. Basic repair parts for pack & equip (stove, water filter, etc.)

     N. Pack cover

     O. Hand Shovel ~ Light weight plastic back packer’s style (for cat hole)

     P. Wide Mouth (Nalgene) Water bottle (1~2) or Hydration System (Platypus/Camel)

     Q. Stave or walking stick is a MUST!!!

 

III. Troop or Common Gear (split weight among hikers)

     A. Tent, or Tarp ~ split poles/tent/fly/plastic/stakes - or - personal Hammock

     B. Cook kit ~ plan meals to use least equipment

     C. Dining fly ~ optional

     D. Stove (back pack type)& fuel (White Gas or Butane/Propane)

     E. Water filter

     F. Bear bags (usually use largest bag stuff sacks) & light weight carabiners

 

IV. FOOD (minimize trash, weight, & things that spoil)

     A. Breakfast ~ Oatmeal, dehydrated fruit, granola mix, or fruit bars

     B. Lunch (best in groups of 2)

           1. Sandwiches ~ pita, bagels, hard bread/roll (doesn't crush)

                 a. smoked or (on first day) vacuum packed meat

                 b. chicken, salmon, tuna, etc. foil packs! & mayo/relish packets

                 c. peanut butter & jelly - plastic sleeves or plastic tub to share

           2. Dehydrated Soup ~ Ramon Noodle

           3. Cheese, crackers (pack in Pringles / Crystal Light can), & trail salami

     C. Dinner suggestions

           1. Bean, pasta, noodle, rice, barely & lentil, dishes

           2. Pasta w/ dehydrated sauce mixes(dehydrate tomato paste into fruit roll)

           3. Dehydrated meat dishes (note: LEAN hamburger re-hydrates best)

           4. Dehydrated Stews & Chili’s work well

     D. Tips ~ Premix ingredients & eliminate container weight & volume

 

V. Car (space is cramped, Class A’s to be worn, stuff to sleep & change)

     A. Wear Class A’s, bring hanger to hang up & toiletries to clean up after

     B. Clothes to change into for Trail (no tear pack open just to start)

     C. Pillow to sleep, book to read, CD or tape to share (NO Discmans!!!)

     D. Plastic bag & “Bounce” for your shoes & dirty clothes for ride home!
